Pilgrimages to see Puffins

You don't just spot a Puffin by chance, you have to go to where they are and scan for them.

They look like they shouldn't work. The tropical-coloured parrot beak, the black and white feather suit, flappy wings, the waddle.

Puffins inspire both delight and tenderness in humans, they bring out the best in us.

Creating Puffin sculptures

You don't need their bright colours to know who they are.

Their shape is unmistakeable.

It's all about their puffy out chest and cheeks.

Smoothing their cheeks is my favourite part of sculpting Puffins.

Occasionally I like to give them wings - watching them have a stretch and a flap on dry land just makes me love them even more.

Puffins are a firm favourite

They never fail to lift our spirits. We smile at the mere sight of them.

Holding one in your hands may not be possible, but creating them in ceramic and bronze means that you can have some of the experience!

Puffins in the wild

These incredibly plucky little characters don't get the credit they deserve. They're so much more than a cheerful beak and flappy feet.

Puffins return to same spot with the same partner year after year, sometimes for decades. The rest of the time they spend out at sea. For a funny little bird they're indredibly tough.

The puffin that you might see on a clifftop in summer is just the visible tip of a life that is mostly invisible, solitary, and extreme. The comedy exterior contains something much tougher underneath.
