WWT Slimbridge Exhibition

This week saw me driving down to WWT Slimbridge again to set up some sculptures in their art exhibition. This is my third visit to the centre with my art and of course, I always take my camera.

There's always plenty of Rooks at Slimbridge, and their iridescent feathers always amaze me. They come quite close as they're used to people, a far cry from the shy occasional visitors to my garden. This one was enjoying a good stretch.

A Rook standing on a post and stretching one leg out behind it

I always remember fondly the time a Rook picked a whole fat ball in its beak, flew over my fence and landed next to two young Jackdaws who were shouting to be fed. Leaving the fat ball with them the Rook then flew off. Rooks are team players.

Leucistic Jackdaw

Which brings me neatly on to this rather unusual looking chap - unmistakeably a Jackdaw but with fawny plumage - a leucistic Jackdaw! Here he is sticking his beak into everything, so he's not that different after all.

Pigeons

I love pigeons. They're such characters. There's nothing plain about them.

Just look at these two lovebirds...so beautiful.

Graceful Swans

Beautiful is a word we can all agree on when it comes to describing Swans. So when I saw this youngster having a good preen it made me chuckle. So awkwardly sprawled out and goofy looking I just had to take a photo.

Oops I did it again

So I managed to spot two Bitterns in one go at RSPB Old Moor a few months back. You may have remembered the completely rubbish blurry photos I grabbed of them both. In case you need a reminder or haven't seen it in all it's glory;

Well, I did it again. This time at Slimbridge.

But I did manage to catch it blending in extremely well before it took everyone in the hide by surprise and flew off.

I was helping a lady to locate it through her binoculars and was aware that swinging my camera round to follow it as it launched was likely to knock somebody's hat off so I was far too slow in response. I'm not insured against optics-related GBH!

Still, we were all VERY happy to have seen it and that makes it a charm for me as it was number 3 in one year!
