Tawny Owl Call

What does a Tawny Owl sound like? Are they a Twit or a Twoo?

A Tawny Owl in leafy green tree canopy

Tawny Owls are the classic twit-twoo owl. But a lot of people don't realise that it's two owls calling to each other that make up the sound.

The female calls Twit and the male calls "twhoo" - they're having a conversation between themselves.

I met a Tawny owl during lockdown and couldn’t believe my eyes, I’d never seen one in the wild before and felt incredibly privileged. It was also during the daytime and she was high up in the canopy.

Since then I've met a Tawny Owl chick whilst out on a walk.

Last night I came out of the workshop and could hear a female Tawny Owl calling. She was SO loud and SO close. She must have been in the neighbour’s tree.

Very often there’s a Jay in there, and the local jackdaws love it there too, but I’d not heard an owl there before. How amazing!
