Hedgehog Awareness Week

Hedgehog awareness week is every year in May.

Organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society it’s a special week dedicated to all things Hedgehog and what we can all do to help our spikey little friends.

Watch out for what's going on social media by searching the hashtag #HedgehogWeek

Hedgehogs closer to home

Whilst it’s great to have an overarching organisation on a national level, I’m a great believer in helping the rescues local to you.

I’m incredibly lucky to have two wonderful hedgehog rescues very close by and have had the pleasure of releasing healthy hoggies and ambulancing poorly hoggies for them.

Rescue hedgehog Cask

One such hedgehog was “Cask.” So named by Watermeadows Hedgehog Rescue because he was found trying to get into the Penistone Beer Festival. He was a very sick hedgehog and it took over a week to make sure he was stable and no longer needing supportive care (and no, it wasn’t from beer consumption!)

Baby Brabbin got his name because I found him out in the daytime in my own garden! I scooped him up into a cardboard box and took him straight to Watermeadows, where he was looked after until he was healthy enough to be released, so home he came.

Milly was the first hedgehog I released for them, followed by Lilly. One of the most beautiful hedgehogs I got to release was this girl – Clover.

hedgehog Sculptures

Whilst the nocturnal ones are shuffling about in the hedges and gardens, you can have your very own hedgehog in your hand!
